Lecture Series at the History Place, Morehead City, NC by Edith Riffe

The History Place in Morehead City, North Carolina will begin it’s 2012 “Lunch with a Dash of History” winter series on Friday, January 20th. The talks, featuring local historian Rodney Kemp, are now in their 11th year. Tickets for the lunch are $12.00 and lecture only tickets are $4.00. Reservations for lunch or lecture only must be made and tickets paid by the Wednesday before each lecture. The first lecture is titled “Caddy Whampus- A Disjointed Lecture.” On February 3rd will be “The Saga of Appleton Oaksmith”; on February 17th, “Ca’e Banks”; on March 2nd, “”Dr. Benjamin F. Royal”; and on March 30th, “Taylor Brothers of Sea Level”. In 2003 Rodney was named North Carolina Historian of the year. Old timers in the Morehead City area call Kemp the “fish house liar” because his tales are history based stories that contain many truths to them. Although his stories may be exaggerated, his southern accent and the way he tells his stories are entertaining and depicts generations of the coastal people. Rodney was born in Tennessee, but raised in North Carolina. His fater used to tell stories and emphasized the importance of the delivery of his tales. Rodney especially enjoyed the stories about the Down East communities. He graduated from Morehead City High School in 1964, attended High Point College in the 60s and later graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in journalism with minors in English and history. He taught elementary and high school for almost 15 years before going into the insurance business. Rodney truly enjoys public speaking and I think he was born for it! If you get the chance to attend one of his lectures, I promise it to be informative as well as entertaining. Edith Riffe 252-646-2156

Edith Lockhart to be in December issue of Our State Magazine!

Edith Lockhart, mother of At Waves Edge Coastal Real Estate Broker Edith Riffe, will be one of the stories in the December issue of Our State Magazine. Mrs. Lockhart is a Beaufort, NC native and is a lifelong crafter and baker. She started baking cakes and pies at a young age and taught herself how to decorate the wonderful homemade cakes she baked. Over the years, she baked hundreds of wedding cakes. She also has been creating her own crafts for many years. Since a 1995 illness, she has slowly been losing her eyesight. However, that has not deterred her from continuing to do the crafts she loves to do. She continues to crochet small, medium and large angles. She covers peach baskets for little girls as baby beds for their dollbabies. She also makes quilts, shell wreathes, neck pillows and any other craft that she comes up with! Although Edith can’t see well enough to decorate cakes any more, she hasn’t lost the talent for being able to continue baking her wonderful goodies.
