Crystal Coast Diving – Morehead City NC

The Crystal Coast, North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks, is known as one of the top diving destinations in North America. With clean, clear water and a host of colorful and intriguing marine life, diving is an incredible experience. Add to the ante a bounty of shipwrecks to explore, and adventure goes hand in hand with underwater beauty.

Those interested in diving can learn while they’re here from professional dive companies and instructors. Those experienced in diving are sure to have a great experience exploring a sunken U-boat and other shipwrecks whose history adds to the underwater allure.

The dive season along the coast of North Carolina usually lasts from May to October or November. Visibility generally averages between 40 feet to over 100 feet. The average temperature is usually in the upper-70s and often reaches into the 80s. The wrecks range in depth from about 25 feet to more than 170 feet, but most of the popular dives are between 80 feet and 125 feet.

The variety of wrecks is what keeps bringing back divers. Wrecks date from the Spanish fleets of the 1500s through current times. Civil War ships, merchant marine boats from two centuries, wrecks from both world wars, commercial shipping casualties, fishing vessels, and much more await adventurous divers. The area truly deserves the nickname, “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”

One of the closer, shallower wrecks provides a perfect introduction to North Carolina diving. Two popular introductory choices are the W.E. Hutton and the Suloide. The W.E. Hutton was a freighter sunk by a German U-boat in 1942 in 70 feet of water just 14 miles south of Morehead City. The Suloide struck the wreck of the W.E. Hutton in 1943 and sank about a mile away at 65 feet. Both wrecks offer lots of colorful marine life.

The deeper shipwrecks offshore remain the main reason for heading to North Carolina. Some popular picks include U-352, HMS Bedfordshire, the U.S.S. Schurz, and the Papoose.

The Newport Pig Cookin’ Contest

http://www.newportpigcooking.com

April 1st & 2nd, 2011

The Newport Pig Cookin’ got it’s start in 1978 when Doris Oglesby, the Director of the Newport Developmental Center, called Mayor Derryl Garner to help her raise funds for furniture for a new wing she was adding on to her school for handicapped children.

Mayor Garner contacted 18 various churches and organizations that were in the Newport area at that time requesting their ideas to raise this money.

As luck would have it, some Newport fellows had cooked in a pig cooking contest that previous weekend in Jacksonville, NC.

Out of that group, Larry Howard and Lionel Garner contacted Mayor Garner with the thought that Newport could have a contest too. It was decided to try it with the goal of cooking 15 pigs to raise the needed $5,000 needed.

The contest was held in early 1979 and with the help of just about everybody in town plus our good neighbors at the Marine Corps Air Station, 42 pigs were cooked and $15,000 was donated to the Developmental Center.

Larry Howard was the first person in charge of the Newport Pig Cookin’ with Thorton Pringle, Ann Howard and Jim Ferrell heading it up consecutively.

In 1985 we were incorporated with Jim Ferrell as President. The organization has grown over the years and now has it’s own building filled with warmers, pots and pans, etc., along with a ticket booth, canteens and a souvenir trailer with a lot of it donated by various businesses and groups.

Our pig cookin has evolved into the “Largest Whole Hog” contest in the country and probably one of the best organized.

We have donated almost $700,000 to the community. Recipients include various sports teams, school booster groups, churches, scout groups etc. in the area. None of this could been accomplished without the dedication and support from the volunteers. We are a strictly volunteer organization, no one receives a salary.
